The
Govt. of India has appointed Syed Akbaruddin as India's permanent
representative in the UN in New York. Akbar, as he is known, was a
familiar face as MEA's spokesperson. Akbaruddin will replace Asoke
Mukerji who will be retiring.

RBI allows 10 companies to set up small finance banks[18/09/2015]
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted ‘in-principle’ approval for 10 companies to set up small finance banks. The approval will be valid for 18 months to enable the applicants to comply with the requirements. The firms include Au Financiers

Microfin Pvt., Ahmedabad and Utkarsh Micro Finance Pvt. Varanasi,

Financial Services Pvt., Bengaluru and Ujjivan Financial Services Pvt.,

J Manjula becomes DRDOs first woman Director General[09/09/2015]

Manjula has been named DRDO's first woman Director General and has
taken charge of the Electronics & Communication Systems cluster, an
official announcement. Before her elevation, Ms. Manjula, who is a DRDO
Outstanding Scientist, was Director of the Defence Avionics Research
Establishment, Bengaluru, since July 2014.
President of India to present Gandhi Peace Prize 2014 to ISRO[09/09/2015]
The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee present the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2014 to Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Gandhi Peace
Prize was instituted by the Government of India in 1995 on the occasion
of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This annual award is
given to individuals and institutions for their contributions towards
social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and
other Gandhian methods.
Smt Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani is appointed as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court [08/09/2015]
In
exercise of the powers conferred by article 223 of the Constitution of
India, the President has appointed Smt. Justice Vijaya Kamlesh
Tahilramani, senior-most Judge of Bombay High Court, to perform the
duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with
effect from 09th September, 2015 consequent upon the retirement of Shri
Mohit Shantilal Shah, Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.
Dr. Hasmukh Adhia takes over as Revenue Secretary[01/09/2015]
Dr.
Hasmukh Adhia took over as the Revenue Secretary, Ministry of Finance,
Goverrnment of India. Earlier Dr. Adhia was holding the charge of
Secretary, Department of Financial Services (DFS) in the same Ministry.
Dr. Adhia had also earlier worked as the Finance Secretary in his cadre
i.e. in the State of Gujarat.
Shaktikanta Das Takes over as Secretary Department of Economic Affairs [01/09/2015]
Shri
Shaktikanta Das has taken over the charge as Secretary, Department of
Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. Shri Das was earlier holding the assignment
of Secretary, Department of Revenue in the same Ministry. Earlier Shri
Das has worked in the Department of Economic Affairs as Additional
Secretary as well as Joint Secretary (Budget).
No death except for terror crimes[01/09/2015]
The Law Commission of India has recommended abolition of the death penalty for all crimes
except terrorism-related offences and waging war against the state.
Noting that the ultimate goal is absolute abolition which could be
brought about through a moratorium or law, the commission has suggested
that a debate on death for terror be left to Parliament.
